Tinnitus
You have probably grown up and gone through most of your life have taken for granted that all the sounds that you hear will come from outside you
Is Tinnitus troubling you?
You are probably reading this because you are experiencing a noise, tinnitus which seems to be coming from one or both ears or from somewhere in your head, it may come and go or be there all the time, day and night. It could be a ringing, buzzing or white noise or one or a combination of many different types of noises of different pitches and loudness.
Although in most cases tinnitus is not serious, there are medical causes of tinnitus which are important to consider and exclude.
Whatever the cause and whatever the type of noise you hear, you may find that it either delays or stops you sleeping, disturbs your concentration in quiet environments and, may either be less noticeable or be aggravated in noisier environments. You may find yourself thinking about it all the time and getting more and more anxious and depressed.
Some Essential Background Information:
These are all commonly experienced by people suffering from Tinnitus.
Whatever the type, loudness or pitch of the noise or noises you hear, you may find that it either delays or stops you sleeping, disturbs your concentration in quiet environments. It may either be less noticeable in noisier environments or be aggravated by outside noises.
Whatever the degree of distress or disturbance this tinnitus maybe causing you, you are likely concerned that you cannot switch it off in the same way you can turn down or turn off a TV or radio that is irritating you, leave a noisy room or ask those around you to be quiet or quieter.
Sometimes tinnitus arises spontaneously and for no obvious reason, sometimes it is the result of exposure to loud noises, sometimes it seems to come on after major life stresses, injuries or illnesses. There are also medical conditions that can cause or aggravate tinnitus.
Dr Surenthiran is very experienced and qualified in the medical management of tinnitus and is able, as a first step in learning to cope with your tinnitus:
1. To give you a very basic understanding of hearing physiology and auditory neuroscience and use this to help you understand of why you are experiencing the tinnitus and some of the related emotions you may also be having.
2. To help you understand that the suffering and distress you may be experiencing is not directly caused by the tinnitus but by the negative emotions that you have generated as a result and the sense of hopelessness this creates.
3. That the first step in helping you to manage your tinnitus and gain control over it is to understand that although it cannot be “switched off” you can control the emotions you generate and therefore the degree of suffering and distress you experience.
4. To make sure that any medical conditions that can either cause or aggravate tinnitus are actively sought, investigated and appropriately treated.
5. To discuss the range of treatment options to help you further deal with the tinnitus more effectively and give you the knowledge and understanding to order to help you make an informed choice.
Dr Surenthiran specialises exclusively in the diagnosis and treatment of all inner ear and brain conditions causing hearing loss, tinnitus, dizziness and giddiness and has the post-graduate training, in-depth knowledge, expertise and experience to do so.
